Navigating the New Facebook Workshop at High Tech Maui on November 17

Facebook Timeline screen shotFacebook has implemented some major changes in the last few months, such as the Subscribe Button, Smart Lists, new filtering options for your home page and new sharing options for the media you consume. But the biggest change is just on the horizon.

Your profile is about to be replaced by the new Timeline feature, which turns it into a chronological scrapbook, showing all your posts going back to when you first joined Facebook, and beyond, to the day of your birth, if you included that information.

Join me as I give a live demonstration of some of the features of the new Facebook and explains how these changes come with major implications in what users are now able to share, and how that opens up a whole new set of potential privacy concerns. It may even change how you use Facebook for business down the line.

Maui Social Media Users Group #MauiSMUG on Thursday, July 28

Maui Time MauiSMUG July 28

At last month’s meeting, the group discussed the idea of a Maui SMUG social media makeover. The concept is to create a real life case study by crafting a social media presence for a local organization. This social media makeover exercise provides valuable insights into the process of establishing an organization’s social media strategy and tactics.

At this month’s meeting, the panelists will walk through a high level theoretical overview of this process and then lead a discussion with the group to define the selection criteria for choosing a social media makeover candidate.

Time permitting, additional topics for discussion may include:

  • Dania Katz leading a discussion on social media etiquette
  • Google+, what is it what are it’s features, how does it differ from other social media
  • Group discussion of favorite social networks and apps
  • Group input about what has and hasn’t worked for their businesses

All beginner and advanced social media users in our Maui community are invited to join us on Thursday,  July 28 for a great discussion. Please note that this and future meetings are FREE, by request. As such, the meetings are no longer catered.

Maui Social Media Users Group #MauiSMUG on June 30

Maui Social Media Users Group #MauiSMUG June 30

As you know, our own MauiSMUG.com site was hacked a couple of weeks ago, the backend portion redirected to some .ru target. Jeff Bennett did a fabulous job getting the site back up again, though we lost many of our uploaded graphics.

Not long after, Liza Pierce’s blog AMauiBlog.com was hacked, the site redirected to one poisoned with a trojan. I found the offending file and replaced it with a clean one, but it was soon replaced again with the poisoned one. The hosting service was of no help whatsoever, so again through Jeff Bennett’s heroic efforts, the blog was moved to a new host and restored.

With all this hacking activity going on, we decided it might be a good subject to address at the upcoming MauiSMUG meeting, along with some other topics, like different methods of upload photos on the fly and adding value using Facebook API’s.

All beginner and advanced social media users in our Maui community are invited to join us on Thursday, June 30 for a great discussion on keeping your blog safe and other insights from panel and participants alike.

New Social Media Boot Camp on June 25 at High Tech Maui

Social Media Boot CampLately, the surveys coming back from our workshops at High Tech Maui have shown a demand for more “advanced” social media training. For an island that was barely aware of social media a year-and-a-half ago, that shows good progress. The demand for the creation of our Maui Social Media Users Group (MauiSMUG) in January is also a good indication.

After much discussion and planning, we have revamped our social media series to include more advanced workshops on strategies and tools for businesses.

To ensure everyone has the prerequisite knowledge to participate in these advanced workshops (to be announced) in the next few weeks, I am kicking off the new series with our first ever Social Media Boot Camp on Saturday, June 25.

This six-hour intensive walkthrough of the social media landscape replaces all our previous 101 workshops, and includes:

  • Getting started in social media for your business:
    • General principles, mindsets, strategies, do’s and don’t's and etiquette.
  • Introduction to blogging for your business:
    • Find out why the blog is the new website, and why your website basically amounts to an overpriced online business card if it doesn’t include a blog.
    • Things to think about before starting a blog.
    • How blogs are hosted on the Web and how to start one.
    • How to come up with good content for your blog.
    • Best practices in blogging for maximum effect.
    • Blogging etiquette.
    • Connecting and autoposting your blogs to your social networks
    • Using services like Posterous to live blog.
  • Introduction to the current popular social networks—setting up accounts, profile management and basic best practices in:
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • LinkedIn

If you’re new to social media and need to learn the basics to get started, or if your staff needs training in social media for your business, this is the workshop for you. Sign up and learn what social media is all about, and how to jump in.

Static websites and email alone no longer work as a viable strategy for your online presence. Come and see how the world is evolving into a global culture of engagement conversations with real people instead of machines.

We’re scheduling these in the afternoons by popular request!
