Download Your Facebook Information

Facebook Download Your InformationThere’s no denying we’re all a little (sometimes more than a little) nervous about what we share on Facebook and what it does with that information, but rarely have we seen it offer features that allow us to take an inventory of what we’ve put there.

Back in October, Facebook introduced the ability to download the information you’ve put on it in an effort to “give us more control.” If you’ve been on Facebook for a while, chances are good you haven’t thought about what you’ve shared during all that time. This gives you the opportunity to take a look at your whole profile in a simplified form and decide if you might want to make some changes.

Several months ago, I wrote about how to control what people see in your Facebook profile. Facebook has announced some sweeping upcoming changes in their privacy options to make them easier to understand and enable better sharing of content.

How To Control Who Sees What In Your Facebook Profile

If you’re like me, you started using Facebook a while back, mostly for cultivating business contacts. Then one day, the college friends started showing up, followed by the high school friends and maybe a few family members.

Suddenly, your wall became an eclectic mosaic of everything from highly relevant business blog posts to photos tagged with a 30-year-younger version of you wearing… ahem… never mind. All in good fun, but maybe you want a little more control over what different people see, so the folks you’re trying to do business with aren’t subjected to all the noise from past lives.

Ideally, you should have a Facebook Page for your business if possible, but sometimes it’s easier to just use your personal profile to keep in touch with people. Fortunately, there is a simple way to make your Facebook profile a place where everyone from all the different phases of your life can coexist harmoniously. All you have to do is create “Friends Lists” to group people into, and adjust your Privacy Settings accordingly.

In your “Friends” page, there’s a box in the left column containing your “Friend Lists”.

Press the “Make a New List” button and start creating different lists to group your friends into. Think about what you want the different groups of people to see, and not see.

Perhaps there’s a group with whom you only want to share your Education and Work info, but nothing else. You might create a “Limited Profile” group for those folks.

There may be a group with whom you want to share everything except your mobile phone number or personal email address. You might create a “Limited Contact” group for them.

After creating your groups, simply go into them and start adding people. When you’re all done, go into your Privacy Settings. Under “Profile”, you’ll see the different parts in your profile you have control over. Go down the list and decide which group gets to see what.

Each of the pulldown menus has a “Customize” option where you can specify people or groups as “exceptions”.

Simply type in the name of the groups you want to hide a particular portion of your profile from.

After making all your changes, click the “Save” button at the bottom, and you’re done.
