The Four Stages of “Getting” Twitter [Infographic]

This infographic has been around for a while, but it pops into my head every time I’m in a situation where I’m struggling to get the point of Twitter across.

Live Tweeting An Event: #Focus2010

We’re in the middle of election season and I led a small team of live tweeters during a gubernatorial debate between candidates Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona and U.S. Congressman Neil Abercrombie last night, hosted by the Maui Economic Development Board in connection with their Focus Maui Nui program.

Who's who of Maui, McCoy TheaterWe were seated in a designated “tweetbox” in the back row of the McCoy Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, where we could see everything. The event was invitation-only, and it was a veritable who’s who of Maui. Kayla Rosenfeld (@radiogal777) did a wonderful job moderating the event.

The purpose of live tweeting is to give your Twitter followers a window into the event and give them an opportunity to participate and be a part of it even though they can’t attend. The event was aired on local radio and television stations as well, but sometimes, the social media channel can the most convenient.

I only had @raatz and @AMauiBlog with me in our little “tweetbox” section, but the beauty of doing something like this with an existing social graph is others start joining in after a while with retweets.

I took a little time out and posted the link to the blog post where everyone could find the live channels to tune into on Facebook and Twitter, and pretty soon, others were listening in and live tweeting as well, so our little team of three grew by several virtual members. This is one of those instances where old and new media can work well together.

For a blow by blow of the evening, here’s a collection of the tweets with our #focus2010 hashtag, via Tweetdoc.

The Power Of The Tweetup

“What’s a tweetup??”

This is a question I get all the time when I mention the word. It’s where Twitter users meet up IRL (“In Real Life”). The next question usually runs along the lines of “Why would you do that?” Well, the obvious reason is the better you know the people you’re tweeting with, the better you can help and leverage each other in business (or any other venture). That’s just Networking 101, whether you’re doing it online or otherwise. Besides, it’s an opportunity to meet some truly awesome people.

Another reason is if you assemble a group of Twitter users in a venue you’re trying to promote and tell them to tweet the heck out of it, you bring the combined reach of all their social graphs to bear on your campaign. Think about it. People basically doing your marketing for you, globally, by word of mouth (or thumbs), instantly, live, while you’re at the event, posting photos and videos, retweeting each other, answering questions. That kind of buzz is hard to beat.

'Ulalena at Maui Theatre

Last night, I was part of something very special. The folks at ‘Ulalena hosted what ended up being the largest tweetup in Maui history in honor of Eat Local Hawaii week, co-hosted by Edible Hawaiian Islands and Aloha Mixed Plate. In exchange for bringing a locally sourced pupu (appetizer), we were treated to a free performance of a this amazing show.

‘Ulalena is a gorgeous and unique blending of people, nature, culture and mythology, set to music and dance in a multi-million dollar venue custom built for its presentation, featuring some of Hawaii’s most distinguished musicians and performers, combining live Hawaiian music with 8-channel surround sound. The state of the art, computerized stage was built in Montreal and then transported and assembled in Lahaina piece by piece. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Maui, this is a must-see experience.

After feasting on everyone’s locally sourced dishes, we took our seats and they dimmed the house lights. Our hashtag for the evening was #ulalenamaui. It was fun watching the tweets using that hashtag go by during the show…

Regardless of what you might be doing to market your business, who wouldn’t want this kind of live buzz for your show… or fundraiser, or garage sale, or open house?

Next time you have something you want to promote, have a party and invite friends with mobile devices, then turn them loose. And next time you’re on Maui, or if you live here, keep a watch on our #MauiTweetup hashtag on Twitter, and come say aloha!

And go see ‘Ulalena! Often. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

Maui Tweetups Are Growing

Maui tweetup at Star Noodle, Lahaina, Maui, HawaiiI’m happy to see how our Maui tweetups have grown and evolved in the last year or so. It used to be just a small group of us meeting at a coffee place or somewhere to catch up on each other IRL (In Real Life). It turned a corner when we did the tweetup at AK’s Cafe on Lower Main Street in Wailuku during our Malama Maui tour with the Maui Visitors Bureau, which ended up being great promotion for the venue, and 12 of the 18 people who attended had never been there before.

Maui tweetup at Star Noodle, Lahaina, Maui, HawaiiThat event seems to have sparked a new tradition of holding tweetups partly to promote various venues on the island. Last Thursday, my friend Dania Katz of Edible Hawaiian Islands organized one at Star Noodle in Lahaina. Our tweetup group got free pupus (appetizers) and desserts, and the proceeds from everything we purchased were donated to the Maui Food Bank. By the end of the evening, we raised $345 and the Star Noodle staff threw in another $100 for a total of $445 donated.

Not bad for a get together with friends old and new… great food, great networking, promoting a great local eatery and raising funds for a good cause. It’s one of the rewards of social media and the real life relationships that result from it.

If you’re on the island, watch our #MauiTweetup hashtag for future tweetup events, like the one coming up at Whole Foods Maui on Tuesday, June 8 and the one at Ono Gelato on Wednesday, June 14. Come meet local tweeters IRL!
